WALTER V. SHIPLEY, CHAIRMAN EMERITUS OF GOODWILL NYNJ, DIES AT 83

Mr. Shipley Joined the Board of Directors of Goodwill ® Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ in 1979 and Served for 31 Years

New York, NY – January 2019 – Goodwill® Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. (Goodwill NYNJ) regrets to announce that Walter V. Shipley, who served on its Board of Directors for more than three decades, died in Florida on Friday, January 11, 2019. He was 83.

Mr. Shipley joined the Goodwill NYNJ Board of Directors in 1979 and served as Chairman from 1999 to 2003. He led the Board’s Strategic Planning Committee from 1983 until 2002, when he received the Volunteer Leader Award from Goodwill Industries International. He remained as Chairmen Emeritus after retiring from the Goodwill NYNJ Board in 2010.

Katy Gaul-Stigge, Goodwill NYNJ President & CEO, said: “We are grateful for Walter’s generosity and many years of service to further our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to gain independence through the power of work. Our condolences go to his family and friends.”

Henry E. Gooss, Goodwill NYNJ Board Chairman, said: “It was an honor to work alongside Walter as a fellow member of the Goodwill NYNJ Board of Directors and then under his leadership when he served as Chairman for five years. He was a strong, yet gentle influence whose thoughtful counsel will be missed. His business acumen was instrumental in helping Goodwill NYNJ go through the 2008 financial recession.”
